Olympic Worldcup 2011 - Delta Lloyd Regatta - Medemblik NED - Day 5 - first winners known, the North Americans
Another fresh breeze day with gusts over 30 kn for the last qualifier fleetraces of the Delta Lloyd Regatta and in three classes, the Medal Races are already completed. In the 470s, Matthew Belcher/Malcom Page AUS with the men and Lisa Westerhof /Lobke Berkhout NED with the women are the winners, a repetition of last year's outcome at the 470 Worlds in the Netherlands, also sailed in strong winds. The Dutch double returned to the Olympic circuit after a longer timeout. In the Starboats, the preliminary decision happened already in the morning, when the Olympic Champions Percy/Simpson GBR lost the mast just after the finish of the last race, keeping them out of the following Medal Race. Robert Scheidt/Bruno Prada BRA had a clear victory, their third Worldcup win this year. The report on the Medal Races.
As from 9 h CET this morning, the other Medal Races and the finals of the des women matchrace - Renée Groenveld NED meets Siljia Lehtinen FIN for Gold, Tunnicliffe USA vs Chang CHN go for Bronze - are on the program. Today's races can be followed live on the Internet.
The 49ers could not sail yesterday. Morrison/Rhodes GBR have an 8 points lead over Outteridge/Jensen AUS before the Medal Race. In the Finns, Ivan Kljakovic CRO is just 3 points ahead of Ed Wright GBR. The third medal winner will be Brendan Casey AUS now on the 3rd place. No changes will happen in the RS:X-men-windsurfer Medal Races, where Lee Taehoon KOR leads with a 17 points advantage on Zach Plavsic CAN. The 3rd Ricardo Santos BRA is another 20 points behind. In the women windsurfers however, the situation remains exciting with Mayaan Davidovich ISR two points in front of Li Ling CHN, and another two points of Jessica Crisp AUS.
Re the North Americans, Canada continues with several top-10 representations above all in the RS:X men, where Plavsic will leave Medemblik with a Silver medal, in the 49ers (Cook/Lowden 7th), in the Lasers Standard (Wright, advancing on 6th) and in the Finn (Douglas 9th loosing some ranks), whereas the Starboat (Clarke/Björn 11th) dropped out of the top-10 not racing the last four regattas. Anna Tunnicliffe, eliminated 2-3 by Groenefeld NED, fighting today for Bronze in the Women's Matchrace petite final, is the only one among the 13 US teams present in the top-10 of the final rankings at the Medemblik Worldcup event. Tania Elias Calles MEX 5th in the Lasers Radial is today among the ten Medal Racers from 10 different nations and four continents.
