AC-45 - America's Cup World Series 2012 - Newport RI, USA - Day 1
The first day of the AC World Series final in Newport ended dramatically. After an initial fleetrace to determine the matchrace seeding - winner was 'Oracle Team Spithill' (James Spithil AUS) - the fleet proceeded to the matchracing flights. 'Oracle Team Spithill' defeated 'Team Korea' with Nathan Outteridge AUS 2-1, catching up a 0-1 start. 'Artemis Racing' (Terry Hutchinson USA) defeated 'Energy Team' (Loïck Peyron FRA) 2-0 and 'Oracle Team Coutts' (Russell Coutts NZL) defeated 'Luna Rossa - Swordfish' (Paul Campbell-James GBR) 2-1. In the fourth duel, 'Team New Zealand' with Dean Barker NZL capsized surprisingly in a not too strong breeze and had to abandon the competition with a damaged wing. 'Luna Rossa -Piranha' with Chris Draper GBR qualifiied for today's semi-finals, that can be followed live on the Internet. After the matchraces, fleetraciing is on the program. Hopefully, 'Team New Zealand' will again be on the water by then. The report and the videos.
