Olympic Worldcup 2011 - Trofeo Princesa Sofia - Palma ESP - Final Day
Sunshine and as from noon a moderate 7-10 kn breeze prevailed on the Bay of Palma yesterday for the Medal Races and the Matchrace finals of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia. Sally Barkow USA and her team defeated Silja Lehtinen FIN 3-1 and a second USSTA success was added by Anna Tunnicliffe USA beating Claire Leroy FRA in the petite final for rank three 2-0 - the rankings.
In the fleet racing class, the leaders brought the trophy usually home. Ben Ainslie GBR was also the Medal Race winner in the Finns, so that the final gap to second-ranked Giles Scott GBR and Thomas Le Breton FRA was evident. A French double was to celebrate in the 470-men with Charbonnier/Mion FRA and Leboucher/Garros FRA, with Patience/Bithell GBR advancing on rank 3 after the Medal Race. No change on the podiumg for the 470-women with Jo Aleh/Bianca Barbarich NZL winning ahead of Kondo/Tabata JPN and Cohen/Vered ISR. The 49er victory remained with Dyen/Christidis FRA in front of Sibello/Sibello ITA on rank 2, but Delle-Karth/Resch AUT succeeded to jump on the podium as third with a good Medal Race. Behind Percy/Simpson GBR, Star Class winner already before the Medal Race, three teams were tied on rank two. Thanks to the better race results, the newly formed team Robert Stanjek/Frithjof Kleen GER got Silver ahead of Torben Grael/Marcello Ferreira BRA with Bronze. Negri/Voltolini ITA had to content themselves with rank 4. In the windsurfers, Dorian Van Rijsselberge NED, RS:X-men remained on top followed by Tom Ashley NZL and Nick Dempsey GBR, whereas in the RS:X-women, Marina Alabau ESP securded the only win for Spain, followed by Charline Picon FRA. Full of excitement the duel for rank 3, at the same time the first encounter for the Olympic selection 2012, between the multiple Olympic and World Champion Alessandra Sensini ITA, age 36, and the youngster and ISAF Youth World Champion Laura Linares ITA. This time, the veteran remained successful, with many more duels to come. The final report, all rankings and the videos of the Medal Races - one for each class !
