America's Cup News - C-Class-Wing-Catamarans in fresh breezes
Wing masts as used by BMW-Oracle have been mounted above all on C-Class-catamarans with a few exceptions. These multihulls, sailed mostly in the US - including a matchrace for the 'little America's Cup - have no other restriction than the overall boats length of 25 foot. Steve Clark USA, one of the protagonists of this class, was asked about his experiences with the wing mast in strong wind conditions. He regrets, that both cuppers at Valencia have only a limited seaworthyness. But he mentioned also, that 18-23 kn is 'pretty much the high end of what we (C-cats) raced in'. An illustrated article in Sailing World.
