Olympic Worldcup 2012 - Sail for Gold - Weymouth GBR - Final Results
The Medal Races deciding on the final outcome of this tune-up regatta to the Olympics taking place in five weeks from now, were sailed in an initial 15 kn breeze, increasing during the day to 22 kn. Some classes were dominated by the known favorites such as in the 470, where Matthew Belcher/Malcom Page AUS confirmed their superiority winning the Medal Race as well. Patience/Bithell GBR and Snow-Hansen/Saunders NZL took Silver and Bronze. Nathan Outteridge/Ian Jensen AUS collected as planned the Gold Medal in the 49ers, but Emmanuel Dyen/Stéphane Christidis FRA winning the Medal Race were finally only two points behind. Bronze went to Fletcher/Sign GBR. Rather unusual is the situation in the Finns, where Giles Scott GBR, not selected for the Olympics, was the superior winner in 5 of the 7 races and even added a clear victory in the Medal Race. while his compatriot Ben Ainslie GBR on rank tw, selected for the Olympics is not only clearly behind, but even finished the Medal Race as last after a capsize. Pieter-Jan Postma NED took Bronze after a close fight. Peter O'Leary/David Burrows IRL were the profiteers of the eternal duel between Scheidt/Prada BRA and Percy/Simpson GBR. As already last year, the young Irish earned Gold ahead of the tied Scheidt/Prada BRA and Percy/Simpson GBR. Winners of the Medal Race were Rohart/Ponsot FRA moving up on rank 5. A leader change happened in the RS:X windsurfers, where Dorian Van Rijsselberge NED climbed on top with a victory in the Medal Race. Julien Bontemps FRA had to content himself with Silver. Bronze went to Nick Dempsey GBR. Zofia Klepacka POL had an outstanding week and crowned her performance with the Medal Race victory. Clear winner of the Silver Medal was Marina Alabau ESP, while Lee Korzits ISR ended the close fight for Bronze in her favour. The 470 women top sailors were Jo Aleh/Olivia Powrie NZL confirming their reputation as big-breeze specialists winning with a big advantage. Amanda Clark/Sarah Lihan USA on rank two delivered their best result this year, while the World Champions Hanna Mills/Saskia Clark GBR took Bronze. The Women Matchrace final between Olivia Price AUS and Claire Leroy FRA went in favor of the Australian winning 2-1. Anna Tunnicliffe USA earned the Bronze Medal in the Petite Final against Ekarterina Skudina RUS. All results, the official final report and the videos.
