Olympic Worldcup 2012 - Sail for Gold - Weymouth GBR - Day 2
Pouring rain, temperatures under 10°C and refreshening winds made day two on the Olympic waters very unaccommodating. In the 49ers, Evans/Powys GBR defended their first place but watch out for the World Champions Outteridge/Jensen AUS advancing on rank 2 despite of a capsize, and the best team of the day, Moore/Stork USA, moving up on 3rd now. An Australian lead still in the 470s with Belcher/Page AUS, but Snow-Hansen/Saunders NZL moved up on the 2nd place with two race wins. The new 3rd-ranked Calabrese/De La Fuente ARG had also a good day with the day ranks 1 and 2. Considerable gaps between the leading women 470s where Mills/Clarke GBR are now 14 points ahead of Lecointre/Geron FRA. The day's best Clarke/Lihan USA advanced on the 3rd place. Three bullets are on the day's record of Giles Scott GBR in the Finns, but for the moment, the Brit still has the 21st of the first day on his account sheet. Ben Ainslie GBR is at present 5 points ahead of Zach Railey USA, followed closely by Scott on 3rd. Julien Bontemps FRA defended his lead in the RS:X-windsurfers. Nick Dempsey GBR progressed on the 2nd rank, Toni Wilhelm GER follows on the 3rd position. A class of her own is Zofia Klepacka POL in the RS:X-women windsurfers with a 16 points lead on Marina Alabau ESP after four races. The veteran Alessandra Sensini ITA follows on rank 3. In the Starboats, O'Leary/Burrows IRL, winners of 2011 already, took the lead in front of Scheidt/Prada BRA and Clarke/Bjorn CAN. The Round Robin of the Women Matchracers is not yet completed, but the first Quarter finalists are known: Ekaterina Skudina RUS (9-2), Olivia Price AUS and Lucy McGregor GBR (je 8-2) as well as Claire Leroy FRA (8-3) are through. Today, the last two direct-qualifiers will be determined. The other teams will sail for for the remaining two slots in a Repechage. The 2012 overflyer Anna Tunnicliffe USA and her team are far away from their normal performance and - with a 5-5 score - will have to fight hard in the two matches today, or then in the Repechage to make the knock-out Quarter-Finals.
